One a penny, two a penny hot cross buns!

Mum and I are back in the kitchen. Guess what we are cooking now? HOT CROSS BUNS!

Mum said she has never cooked hot cross buns ever before. I know my dad loves to eat them. Dad eats them for breakfast, lunch and dinner throughout Easter.

Mum asked me to go and look up the meaning of hot cross buns, whilst she got out all the ingredients. All I knew was the nursery rhythm that my Nanna and Mum would sing.

I found that the eating of hot cross buns marks the end of Lent. For Lent this year I gave up using my iPad but every now and then I used MY brothers. Mum said that wasn’t ok, but I said, “I only gave up MY IPAD”. My mum rolled her eyes at me.

I also found the cross on the bun represents the crucifixion of Jesus. The spices that we added to the bowl were to remind Christians of the spices they put on the body of Jesus at his burial.

There are lots of steps to this recipe! Preparing the yeast and the dough. Waiting for it to rise, adding the crosses. Our crosses were pretty fat and not neat like the shop bought ones. Check out all the steps in the photos below!

Mixing the butter and spices with the flour.
Preparing the dough.
Finn piping the crosses on the buns.
Our fingers crossed they would rise.
Pasting on the glaze.

The last step is to make a pot of tea & find some butter!

By Grace and mum.
