Social distancing rules meant there we will no dawn service in the park or marching with our school. Penny helped me make some art work for our dawn service. I coloured in poppies and used sticky tape to put them on a bottle. In the bottle I added lots of rosemary and a candle.
Mum woke us up at 5.30am and we all quickly dressed in our uniforms. I couldn’t find my school shoes and mum said, “Don’t worry about shoes you will miss the dawn service!”.
Together we lighted many little candles at the end of our driveway. Lots of other people came out and the same. We listened to the dawn service on the phone.
After the last post we stood for a minute silence. I thought about the people that went to war. A song came on, I turned to mum and said, “I haven’t heard THIS SONG IN WEEKS!”. Mum quickly told me that was the Australian National Anthem. “Oops I better start singing!”.
As the sun began to rise, kookaburras were singing and that was pretty cool. My Uncle Dave (mums brother) spent the dawn service at my great grandparents grave with candles, he sent mum a photo. Mum had a few tears.
Mum wanted a photo of us and my art work. Finn was scared that my candle was going to set the rosemary and his school jumper alight! I said, “Finn smile, it’s freezing, I want to go inside and have an ANZAC biscuits for breakfast!”
Mum thought Penny’s and my ANZAC biscuits was the best breakfast ever!
