The name Finisterre, comes from the Latin finis terrae, meaning “end of the earth”. In Roman times it was believed to be the end of the known world.
It was thought to be the further westernmost point of Europe. However, there is a further western point in the country of Portugal.
Out at Finisterre there is a 0.0km marker. Some people hike from Santiago de Compestella to Finisterre, this is another 90km to hike.
Out at the peninsula there is a large lighthouse.
An old tradition is burning your hiking gear on arriving at the end of the world.
