Zafra – Merida (by train)
15 & 16 May 2023
With Camino Kymmy by my side once again, we hopped on the train at Zafra and headed to Merida.
The charming old city welcomed us with open arms as we settled into our cozy apartment. Today, it was my turn to take charge of mealtime. We stumbled upon a cafe that seemed ordinary from the outside, but turned out to be a quirky fast food joint. Just when I thought my Spanish was improving my order did not turn out as planned! I was served two plates of cheesy bacon fries! Needless to say, my lunch choice didn’t earn me any culinary awards!
After a leisurely stroll through the plaza, we set out to find dinner. We decided on Esplanada with tuna dish to balance out the indulgent greasy lunch.
Our rest day was filled with exploration, from the impressive Teatro y Anfiteatro, to sipping cold drinks in the old bull ring. We even toured the ruins of an Old Roman house – Casa del Mitreo y Columbarios, then back for lunch and a little siesta!
As soon as the temperature dropped, we set out to uncover the hidden gem that was the Templo Diana, tucked away in a secluded alley just a stone’s throw away from our apartment. Of course mum and Penny returned there later with a Tinto from the freezer! Camino Kymmy & Greg on cooking duty tonight.
