Bullfighting

In Spain they have a tradition of fighting bulls!

In Pamplona the running of the bulls is in July each year. You can run with the bulls down the narrow streets towards the arena or you can sit and look out from the balconies.

In Pamplona there are huge sculptures of men running from the bulls.

Bullfighting in the bull ring is a physical contest and involves the bull fighter trying to stop or kill the bull.

There are many rules to bullfighting events. They try to put small short spears into the bull and as the bull moves the spears dig in more to the bull and make the bull very angry.

Dad said they are a particular breed of cattle, the Spanish Fighting Bull. These bulls must be bred in large ranches, and in condition similar to the wild.

Dad also said that bullfighting is often linked to Rome, where many human-versus-animal events were held as competition and entertainment, the Venationes. These hunting games spread to Africa, Europe and Asia during Roman times.

The arenas they fight the bulls in looks like where the gladiators fought.

Most large cities have a bullring. In Madrid we seen the massive bullring. Dad looked it up on the internet for some photos. These are the photos we found of the Madrid bull ring.

In Madrid opposite the bull ring was a cafe that had bull heads on the walls. Each bull had a plaque underneath it. The name of the bullfighter was on the plaque.
